So much depends on the user's preferred method of viewing. I haven't 
used slides for general photography for years. I finally figured out 
that I don't much like slide shows and that was part of the reason I 
wasn't viewing and enjoying my own work. Also, the advent of film 
scanners, aside from the caveats you raise, meant that I could create my 
own color darkroom in my computer, something I never wanted to get into 
in the emulsion and chemical world. Freed from the frustrating world of 
mass produced automated prints, expensive and often problematic 
enlargements, etc. I'm pretty happy with the changes in technology.

True - if that is your preferred method of viewing. I have found that I 
rather like viewing my images on the computer screen. They have a 
brightness and life missing from prints. I agree, however, that the 
small, considerably compressed JPEGs on many web sites are pretty 
useless as far as quality goes.

Absolutely. Just pointing out that the medium in which the comparison 
should be made varies with the creator and viewer.
