There's still something magical and mystical about an outhouse. You don't
need any water to flush and sometimes the view is great if you leave the
door open. I used to have a great outhouse on a mountain on the Wyoming
border. That was the best place to see wildlife except for one cow moose
that delighted in keeping people trapped in there for a while. I was afraid
to take a camera in there as I'm so clumsy it probably would have been
dropped in the hole. Several trees fell all around that outhouse but none of
them hit it. I considered it a charmed place after that. I wrote some of my
best poetry in there. We sold the property but I still went back and visited
that little shack now and then. The new owner moved it and things just
haven't been the same since. One day I told my wife that some of my best
work had been done in the outhouse and, for once, she had no argument.
Someone published a coffee-table photo book several years ago that was a
collection of photos of outhouses. Some were very ornate and elaborate. The
photography was very good with a lot of emphasis on the weathered wood
surfaces. The project was probably funded by a grant from our tax dollars.
