Hi Chuck:

I like your first thought, spring for the right tool. I can just imagine how
an expensive scope or lens would look and perform like sandwiched between
two blocks of wood, a little like buying Wal-Mart's cheapest  tires for your
Porsche or Radio Shack mini speakers for your Bang and Olafsen.
