I believe it may be for the same reason we don't want a metal foot on
flashes we use with OM cameras. The foot of the flashes is designed (I
believe it was intentional) to break before the flash shoe is damaged. If
a metal part were used, then the damaged part would be the camera flash
shoe, which would be much more expensive to fix.
