that M means Memory and C means Card

Like you, I thought that I means Industry but it seems that we are both
wrong - International.

PCMCIA is actually Personal Computer Manufacturer's Computer Industry
Association... meaning a "standards" group.  However, no one (except me,
maybe) could ever remember this mouthful and so it's most appropriate that
it fostered the People Can't Memorize Computer Industry Acronyms.
And, yes, it is now simply called PC Card.
