Agreed Gary - and the worst 'culprit' is the dirt and dust which accumulates
on rubberised lens grips, and you can't reliably get brush, Q-tips or
whatever into the pattern of the grip to clean it.

I have what may seem to be a high-risk strategy - but it WORKS. I use a
water-based latex adhesive! Coat the grip with the adhesive and let it dry
fully, then simply peel off the adhesive together with the dirt. It is best
appreciated in a photo - you can't see all the dirt by eye alone.

Over here the adhesive is marketed as "Copydex", and the manufacturer's MSDS
notes that it is "Aqueous adhesive compounded from natural rubber latex
emulsion. Contains low levels of ammonia". It is white and
characteristically smelly, dries almost clear. It is NOT Walther's Goo or
anything similar, solvent based.

For the items I've sold on eBay, presentation in a close up photo really
helped sell the stuff.
