I'd suggest DIY on the lens. If it's so bad that you may toss it out, then
 why not TRY a DIY? You may end up with a clean and working lense AND some
 good experience in taking a lens apart. Or you may end up with experiences
 in how NOT to do ;) Either way, you are no worse off than if you toss it ;)
