I see what you mean as regards standard filters - but was the conversation
not about a polarizing filter in a rotating mount? 

I'll try the pencil trick (or maybe some graphite powder which I have for
padlocks).

I meant by using the stopper against the glass of the filter, not the ring.
If both are clean, I don't think it would mar the filter.  And as far as
lubrication of filter threads, I always run a soft lead pencil around the
threads before I put a new one into use.  Seems to help.
