I was having the same thoughts Jez, having a couple of weeks ago bought a
can of the 'real' stuff made for the job. It contains a blend of Argon,
Carbon Dioxide and Nitrogen. I assume the Nitrogen is there as the
propellant, and the Carbon Dioxide as the 'filler' to make it affordable. I
will know what to use next time!

Argon is perfect for the job, but unless you do a bit of welding you're
unlikely to have easy access to it. Fortunately, there's a readily
available, inexpensive alternative: butane. That's right, gas lighter fuel.
It's more dense even than argon, so it just sits on top of the liquid,
keeping any leftover air away.
