Darn, I was with you right up to that last little bit about everything still
working when done :-)

Seriously, John is right, there are a lot of little tips and tricks that you
need to know when trying to fix anything deep down in the body. It's just
as important, if not more important, to know what not to remove than what
needs to be removed when trying to fix something like this.  When unsure
about your ability to successfully perform a repair, ask yourself the question,
am I willing to lose the body in the process of the repair?  If not then get
someone else to fix it because they won't fix it after you've tried.
