Delta 400 really is best served in Ilfotec DD-X developer. The
grain is "softened" and the tonal range is extended a bit more
with this "matched" developer. I'm not sure exactly which Agfa
developer they would be referring to, but my guess is that it's
pretty close (if not exactly the same) to D76.
One tidbit that you said had to do with the contrast. What ISO
setting are you shooting the film at?
