Hey fellow Zuiks...

I know I've been absent for a while....things have been so busy of
late, I haven't had much chance to peruse the list until tonight.

At the end of April, I went to my Peter Read Miller Intense Moments
Sports Photography workshop in Denver. My workshop was comprised of
16 fellow students, some of whom were pro freelancers or
photojournalists.

It was a lot of fun but very tiring. We had a heavy schedule of
shooting, as well as talks and critique.

BTW, Canon sent over $189,000 of equipment for us to use, 10 1D's, 10
10D's, 8 300/2.8's, four 400 2.8's, 500's and 600's, 70-200/2.8's,
etcs. They also sent a technical advice guy, Erik Allin, for the
whole time. Needless to say, Nikon sent, yep, you guessed
it----zippo! A no. of guys that were shooting Nikon D-SLRs went home
after the workshp mumbing that they were selling their gear....

The first day was mtn biking in the hills above Denver. It decided to
snow on us, but we were intrepid and shot some even more intrepid
mountain bikers as they rode up and down for us in the snow, getting
colder and wetter the whole time.

The next day Peter showed us how to shoot remotes with floor and
railing clamps, Pocket Wizards, etc. That afternoon we went and shot
some high school basketball, and I set a remote with my D60 above the
backboard hooked up to a pocket wizard. I would fire the shutter when
the players would run over to that basket and try to stuff the ball,
usually when I was at the other end of the gym shooting from the
floor with my 1D. We also did portraits with strobes and reflectors,
etc. That night we shot Arena Football, the Colorado Crush, with full
pro credentials. I have to admit I have never shot anything as
difficult as arena football...that was tough! Very fast action that
is hard to follow in tight quarters with a big lens. The next day we
shot Track and Field, and then Major League soccer at night, also
with credentials. I borrowed Erik Allin's Canon 1D MkII for about 20
mins. Wow! Even faster and more responsive autofocus than a 1D and
BIG image files! What a camera. I also borrowed a Canon 500/4 IS and
shot with that handheld for about 20 mins. Sweet lens.

What fun! Peter looked at almost everything we shot for all the
events, and we had critiques on the good, bad and ugly.

Overall, everyone had a good time and we learned a lot...I'd love to
do it again next year.
