you are courageous to use javascript at a first step.
After about 5 years I still prefer simple html and use Arachnophilia editor.
I noticed with the house demolition index page that the thumbnail images
are spaced very far apart.
I had a look at the coding of that page and the reason for the wide spacing is
that you have made the cell widths 500. That large number is not needed for
such small images.
Arachnophilia has a function that automatically calculates image widths, so
it is easy to create cell sizes to suit the images.
