Although I have previously expressed my skepticism relative to reviews of gear
in photo publications, still, I was heartened to read in the "Digital Help"
column in the July issue of "Shutterbug" the following:

"However, if I were to choose from what is available today for film scanning, I
would select the Minolta DiMAGE Scan Elite 5400 for 35mm film..."

I'm feeling smarter already today. :-)

As for books on film scanning and printing, I have both "Mastering Digital
Scanning" and "Mastering Digital Printing," each of which have been recommended
here. While they are excellent and very thorough and informative, they tend to
bog simple-minded folk like me down with a lot of extraneous material. I want
to know what time it is, not how to build a %@#*$+! clock!

So, with that in mind, let me recommend a publication: "Epson Complete Guide to
Digital Printing" by Rob Sheppard. It covers not just printing, but tuning up
after scanning, too, and actually gave me a better idea of what to do with
histograms and levels and layers, et al., than either of the other two books.

And if you're using an Epson printer, this book may tell you just about all you
need to know about both printing and photo editing. Plus, it's half the length
of either of the other two books. I got through it without straining my finger
or my lips getting tired.

Everybody has a photographic memory. Some people just have crappy scanners.
