I have had estates for a while now, fitted with the longitudinal bars
on which to mount the cross bars, bike rack, top box etc ... The
Mercedes E300, the ML270 and now my BMW 320d (all right it's quite
small to call an estate ;-)) all had a limit of 100kg stipulated for
weight on the roof bars. There was no hint of flexing as I reached the
limit, and as I am about 85kg (I can lose the extra any time I like of
course), it would not have been too much to put a small platform
between the bars and stand on it with a tripod and camera. However, as
someone suggested, perhaps a small stepladder with a camera attachment
would be more effective and safer.

Chris

p.s. the Mercs, both turbo-diesels, had excellent carrying capacity,
ample performance and gave me better than 35mpg (about 30 to the little
US gallons). cb
