It's my considered opinion that a ball head on a monopod is not a necessity,
but when I feel the need for one, I use the one from the Cullmann travel kit.
It weighs about 10 ounces, locks securely (unless you're using something like a
Zuiko 350/2.8) and, combined with my Stoney Point walking stick/monopod, makes
for a total weight of just over 1 1/4 lbs.

And the Cullmann travel kit includes lots of other goodies -- a ground spike; a
big, heavy-duty screw that will go into trees, stumps, fence posts; a car
window clamp; and a big suction cup thingy that'll stick real tight to a car
top, hood (bonnet), or trunk (boot), or even the windshield (windscreen), all
of which the little ballhead will fit onto. The whole outfit weighs less than
three pounds. And, I almost forgot, it includes a mini tripod that, at just
over a pound, is an absolute wonder. Far more steady than you might expect.

Clever, these Alsatians!

Walt
