[OM] Changing light, changing exposure

Catching up on stuff posted while I was away, I see there has been some
discussion of how to handle changes in lighting that occur while waiting, for
whatever reason, to fire off a shot. There is a simple solution, at least for
users of any of the OM-4 mutations. I know this won't work with an OM-1 or
OM-3, and since I don't have any sort of OM-2, I'll leave it up to you who do
to decide, although I suspect it may work. But then it may not.

Determine the correct exposure by whatever means suits you best, whether
multiple averaged spot readings, incident readings from a hand-held meter,
Sunny 16, divine inspiration, or whatever. Compose the photograph however you
intend to take it and set the camera to automatic, which means, of course,
center-weighted exposure control. Assuming you can remember the "correct"
exposure you've previously calculated, change the settings on the exposure
compensation and/or ASA setting dials so that the center-weighted exposure
reading is the same as what you've calculated by whatever supposedly more
sophisticated method you may have used. Now fuhgeddaboudit.

If a cloud wanders over as you wait for the spirit to move you, the wind to die
down, or the Second Coming to begin, the light will change uniformly over the
entire scene and the camera will measure this fluctuation in illumination, take
appropriate action, and your exposure will be correct -- that is, if you
figured it out correctly to begin with.

This ain't rocket science.

Walt

Everybody has a photographic memory. Some people just don't have any film.
