OK, this is getting even weirder.  Add to the earlier analysis the
possibility of mirror mechanism malfunction, though it would be incredible
for the mirror to bounce down enough to obscure a significant portion of the
image as the curtains travel.  Perhaps it could also be a problem with the
mirror release position, but the same applies.

In any event, try this -- with the lens removed, no film, set on "B", camera
wound.  Gently and carefully hold the front edge of the mirror (try not to
get a fingerprint on the mirror!), press the shutter release, then slowly
allow the mirror to rise.  The shutter should trip when the mirror is about
1/4 inch or so from the top.  If the shutter fires noticeably sooner than
that, or doesn't fire until the mirror is almost all the way to the top,
that's a problem.

middle / top with length of about 1/4 of image.  Not right down the full
image.  Looks like a vertical eye as its doesn't take up the whole pic.
Although this doesn't happen on all pics hence my leaning towards a power
issue.
