[OM] Of flares jeeps and snotnosed kids with ghetto rockets

A couple of nights ago I went downtown to photograph an iridium
flare with the courthouse. (mandetoray OM content). While I
was setting up the camera the local racers were also gathering
for some nonesense.

The flare came and went, I successfully captured a wonderful
picture of the courthouse--minus the flare. I just missed the
alignment. 61 degrees is higher than I though. Oh, well, the
night was still young...

I asked where they were going to run and they indicated a rather
sane spot (suprise). Ok, I'm in. Now, I'm not a young kid, nor
do I have a blatty honda with a f--- pipe. Most of the cars
around here are more show than go, so that's what I was planning
on. How far? 1/8 mile. Cool, I can hand 1/8 mile. You really
can't get in too much trouble in 1/8 mile. In that distance
grip is more important than aerodynamics. I also knew the
pavement there and knew something that they didn't.

So, off we go. These guys were a bit incredulous. Geezer in a
what? Cherokee. "Smoke the a**-****" I heard. Ok, I'm really
feeling ornery now. Fortunately, they didn't insist on
money--we were out for fun.

So I'm up against a six-cylinder Honda Prelude with no legal
exhaust and other various mods. I could tell he was out to
embarrass me.

I made sure that everything was warmed up really
well--especially the cat. The replacement cat I have on my jeep
is nearly transparent when hot and the rest of the exhaust is
"open" if you know what I mean. (unfortunate 4-wheeling victim).
Oh, did I mention the 4wd? You see, the jeep has a very torguey
engine and with four driving wheels and the nearly open
exhaust... I did take the risk of opening up my intake, but
felt that it was worth it.

Well, we're lined up on a really nice stretch of pavement and no
cops in sight, We're #4 off the line. GO!!!! I had the RPMs
locked at 4000 and I'm standing on the brakes. I planted the
right foot and dropped the brakes. Tires squeeling by the car
next to me, I was three car lengths ahead of him before he even
got moving. The slushy transmission made for a really slow
transition into second and he was gaining on me. Squeel, he's
into second now, and I gain another car length on him. Third
gear and it's almost over with. My engine just doesn't have
enough gumption at this point and aero is becoming a problem.
He passes me and the race ends with him half a car-length ahead
of me. If I had a manual tranny, he would have never caught me.

Not too shabby. I take it out of 4wd and let it cool down for a
minute before shutting down. We all talk for a few minutes
while another dozen pairings come down the road. I had fun and
just had to go and rent "The Fast and Furous" on the way home.
Our top speeds really didn't exceed my normal "going to work"
speed.

That does remind me, I've got to go hook my airfilter back up.
I think a Cherokee would make a great "sleeper". But, maybe a
modded Mazda might be in my future.

But, then again, maybe not. I'd have a hard time explaining
those speeding tickets to my wife.
