My problem is that I spend most of my day in front of a
computer. Processing time for digital prints is the last thing
I want to do on the computer when at home. I'd rather be online
racing.
Also, having a dedicated darkroom space (no multitasking room
requirements) is extremely handy. When I've got all the
chemistries bottled and ready, it takes me about the same length
of time to rinse the trays and poor as it does to turn on a
computer.

I try to avoid sticking my fingers into the chemicals, but even
so, today's modern chemicals such as the Ilford lineup is pretty
harmless. Another thing, is that I maintain my room temperature
at 68 degrees so there is much less chemical transfer into the
air as when the chemicals and air are different temperatures.
Chemical fumes just aren't a big problem if the room is large
enough and your nose isn't four inches from the trays.
I get plenty of excercise when working in the darkroom. Given
that a fine print may cost me a couple dozen test prints and
that the wetside and dryside are on opposite sides of the room
and the room is big enough that I've actually got to get up from
the stool...
