It didn't start that late. When I was a teenager, I had a neighbor who
bought a TR2a. (His mother had a lovely MGTD.) He spent a lot of time
and money on that car. It was a lovely BRG with custom upholstery,
perfecr wire wheels, etc. But it kept coming back behind a tow truck.
I'm not surprised a V8 would break the rear end of a later one. The
little 4 banger in this one broke one of the axle shafts! After seeing a
car so simple in design that nothing should go wrong put out of
commission time and again by shoddy details and materials, I swore off
British sports cars, at least the ones cheap enough that I could have a
prayer of affording them.

My only sports car has been a 1971 Porsche 911T. It ran well for years.
It had only one on the road failure, and that should have been avoided
if the people who last serviced it had done a proper job of routine
undercarriage inspection. As it was, I fixed it with a couple of
aluminum turkey skewers I bought in a nearby little shop and drove it
home. My ex neighbor has now tarted it up with racing suspensin, 2.7L
Carrera engine, etc. So it is out there somewhere frightening people.
