After deciding that #2 was the way to go, I tried #3 on every subsequent 
scan -- sorry, I mean "conversion image" -- and #3 has since the first few 
images always been better!  So I reckon my method will be just to let the 
converter have its way and try to improve on it only if I don't like the 
results.  But so far, this just got a lot easier.  Nice little plug-in.
