About ten years ago a rule of thumb was an income of about $1 per year for
each image that had been accepted by an agency. That took a lot of accepted
images to get a reasonable income. Get mentally ready for rejection because
most images are not accepted. The current practice of selling huge lots of
images on CDs for low prices makes it hard for stock photographers to make
money now. You need exceptional quality and something unique that sets your
work apart from others. Many images for stock use are also composed
differently for use in advertising layouts. For instance open space for
adding text or logos is important sometimes. It really helps to have an "in"
with an art director or agency rep so you know what they need and shoot with
that in mind. Once in a while someone still gets big bucks for an image but
its getting more rare all the time. Most of the big payments now go for
celebrity spy photos. There is a business side to stock photography that you
also need to understand. The usage rights you sell can vary from one-time
use to outright sale of the image and the agencies are not all ethical about
that. There are some list members doing stock photography. Ag Schnozz does
and will probably weigh in on this. I believe Adam Bolt also is successful
at this. There are books addressing stock photography but I don't know what
is current. The Photographer's Marketplace is published annually and may be
helpful. To make money, expect to work hard. Good luck in your venture.

Has anyone experience with or recommendations for slide libraries ? I am
especially interested in ones dealing with travel photography. Having
dragged my OM kit around the world and filled a filing cabinet with
slides, I would like to see some money back form them.

I am particularly interested in finding out how much return a photographer
can expert per year, per 1,000 slides, say.

Any views on libraries which supply only in digital form (meaning that I
could give them scans and retain the original slides), would also be
welcome.
