That's what I believe. I know it to be true for the 300D, and believe it
to be true of all or virtually all DCs that shoot RAW images.

Think about it. You spend a whole bunch of money designing your camera
so it can automatically produce a nice sharp, well exposed and white
balanced image with proper contrast from the raw output of the sensor.
Are you going to throw away all that info when you store the RAW image?
You know you aren't a fool, and you know that many of the users of the
camera won't be, but that many will be. So all you have to do to damage
your reputation and hurt yourself in the marketplace is to sell the
camera with a piece of software that, by default, produces a poorer
image than that produced right out of the camera in JPEGs. So of course
you store the camera settings in the RAW file and present that as the
default image state when opened in the viewer/converter.

Of course, you could duplicate all the calculations done by the camera
in the RAW viewer/converter. And make it slower, and less acceptable to
the user, since all these cameras have custom processors to do the image
creation in the camera and you would have to duplicate all that in the
viewer. And why bother, you already have the answer at hand?
