Sorry if I was unclear. The adjustment I did was intended to be as far
towards the other side as the original was dark and moody, to show the
range of effect possible with the results of the scan. I was trying to
help get a definition from Michael of what he expects. I didn't spend
much time on it, a reduced 8 bit JPEG doesn't leave much to work with
for any subtlety. I think the lack of smooth graduation of tonality is
the result of too much adjustment for an 8 bit image.
I agree that the original is a more pleasing image in some ways,
certainly it has a special mood. On the other hand, I assume Michael
wasn't pleased with it or why would he have asked for others' opinions?
So I tried to provide some context. One problem is with the original
shot. If the point is the flowers, it's shot from the wrong side,
leaving so much of the arrangement in shadow. On the other hand it has
too much of the image blocked up with murky detail in the shadowed
flowers for a clean study in light reflection, refraction and shadow.
If I had the original and wanted to change it to my taste, I would
probably leave the everything as it is except for the flowers, which I
would bring up a bit. Somewhere in between mood piece and picture postcard.
And yes, I do check my monitor against standards on the web, some more
sophisticated than that one. However, our eyes and tastes may well
differ. :-) I know you have a more subtle sense of color than I do.
When I used to go bird watching with a former girlfriend it was
interesting what we would report to each other about a brief glimpse at
a bird. She would be more aware of color and I would be more aware of
shape, shading and features. Between the 2 of us, we made a pretty good
observer.
