I looked into this a bit ago for a different problem. If what you want
is pleasant sound in modest sized rooms, rather than really good/loud
sound, there is a potential solution. X10.com makes a gadget that
transmits stereo audio from a transmitter that they claim will take
input from lots of things on the 2.4 ghz band to a receiver/amplifier
which will power modest speakers. The overwritten and underinformed ad
copy just says 10 watts, without specifying total or per channel. I
e-mailed them about that and they replied that it was actually 12 watts
per channel.

The wireless self-powered speakers are pretty poor, I believe. With this
gadget, you could at least have a choice of speakers, as long as they
are reasonably efficient. The need I had evaporated, so I never bought
one. With your different AC power specs, you might have to adapt. It
they use wall-warts, as I suspect they do, you would just need different
ones. I also don't know if their trasnmission specs meet UK rules, but
they do answer e-mail questions posed to the address somewhere on their
site <http://www.x10.com/entertainment/vk59a_s_ps29.html>.
