Hi Siddiq,

Their origin was for goods transport with a small living area by the helm.
Now they are  for leisure and permanent habitation and are often equipped to
luxury standards. There are often political moves to start using them for
transporting non time sensitive loads but they usually come to nothing. The
network of canals is sufficiently extensive to at least keep the dream of
transporting goods alive.
