I had this thread in mind when I took these shots. One thing that
helps with manual focus is the way the out of focus area close to
focus happens. It may not help with aesthetics, but it does make
focusing easier in some cases.

Personally if the out of focus area is rendered smooth, then the
aperture setting will change it more than lens to lens. Also the longer
the focal length it seems the more the bokeh is the same from lens
to lens.

I cannot tell any difference in Walt's two shots. Simply changing the
aperture one stop either way will make more difference. Just a touch
of sharpening will create more difference than these two lenses.
Here are two identical shots, one at F4 the other at F5.6:

Sharpening may have more of an effect on bokeh close to DOF.

Chris's comments below suggest to me that the pattern and shape
of the background material, and the location of the out-of-focus stuff
relative to the DOF makes more difference than the lens.

So, is bokeh the part just going out of focus or the background further from
the DOF, or both?
