Not so sure about that. I've thought for a long time that there are 2
broad aspects to photography, and really all the visual arts. One side
is the technical, which is a bigger deal for many people in photography
than for say painting, where the technology is not as complex and
mathematical/mechanical. On the other is the 'eye' or even internal
process of visualization.

Years ago I had a relationship with a woman who was a wonderful
photographer. She knew almost nothing about photography in the sense
that we tend to think about and discuss it on the list, the technical
aspects. She had a simple match needle Pent*x of some sort with
something like a 50/1.8. She really couldn't articulate how she chose a
balance between shutter speed and aperture. I'm not sure she even fully
understood what I was talking about. Yet she could travel, which she
loved, and come back with many exquisitely composed, properly exposed
slides with correct focus and good DOF for the subject that could easily
be used for travel book/mags or calenders. Odder still, she wasn't
really aware of how much better her photographs were than those of
others taking snapshots.

She is a perfectly competent cook, but doesn't enjoy it all that much.
She much prefers my somewhat wider ranging cooking and likes to do the
cleanup. A great trade-off for both of us.
