We got brother and sister kittens when I was in my teens. I wanted to see
how big he would get, so I talked my parents into delaying neutering them.

One day in the fall he disappeared for a day. He returned, but soon after
disappeared for three days. Being adolescent myself I thought this was
perfectly understandable behavior. Then he disappeared.

It was a hard winter, which in Ottawa is saying something. We gave him up
for lost. The next spring though, we heard through friends that someone a
couple of kilometers away had taken in a cat matching ours during the
winter. We visited, and it was our cat. They'd found him under their porch,
cold and miserable in bitter weather, and had taken him in and fed him
since. I think his ordeal had been pretty traumatic - his spirit seemed if
not broken, then pretty dented. They'd saved his life, and their children
loved him. We figured in the scheme of life he was their cat now, thanked
them for saving him and bade him goodbye.

We'd fixed his sister since, and she stayed with my parents to age 23 or so.

Andrew
