I've written a complete reply to this thread in the other thread, Re: 
excessive quoting -- which is where the discussion was until someone 
decided to make it a new thread (sheesh!). I won't repeat it here.

Rules and standard practices evolve for good reasons -- in this case, 
logic and adherence to the natural human flow of conversation and 
writing (down, not up, forgot to mention that in the other thread) 
and reading and thinking.

But if people want to ignore all that and do it their way, I'm sure I can cope.

Many mailing lists actually have rules, and people who don't follow 
them are booted.

Seems to me that it's a small ask for people to follow standards -- 
but I'm neither from Lilliput, nor a dictator.
