Welcome Ian,

Try taking some pictures with your tripod legs only partially extended. With
heavy lenses my experience was that the quick release on the head seemed to
be more of a problem than the legs. The Arca-Swiss style quick release seems
to have made a big difference. The metal to metal contact make things work
better. http://www.reallyrightstuff.com has some good info. I use bits and
pieces from reallyrightstuff.com , kirkphoto.com , and acratech.net .
