There is just nothing like Gary's OM lens tests for Can*n lenses. This
site at least covers what's available in current and recently
discontinued lenses <http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/>. His
reviews are a little hokey, but better than nothing. They certainly made
clear a couple of lenses I didn't want. And there are links to other
reviews.
I ended up with the 24-85/3.5-4.5. That's roughly 38-136mm equivalent
and since I lean towards the longer lenses, a pretty good fit for me. I
tried a neighbor's 28-135 (45-216 35mm eq.). It was a pretty nice lens,
but I was looking for a general purpose zoom and wanted something with a
bit more WA. I know lots of people are allergic to the 'Bay, but I got a
very nice 24-85 there for a bit over $190 delivered. Quick, quiet AF,
good range, good close focus and quite sharp as far as I can tell with
the 6mp sensor. Remember that all small DSLR sensors have anti-aliasing
filters over them that limit the ultimate resolution that gets to them,
regardless of what the lens can do. I've been very pleased with it.
If you are a wide angle maven, things get more expensive. All of Can*ns
shorter zooms that fit the 10D are the rather expensive "L" series. The
new 17 - 85 mm F4.5 - F5.6 IS USM and 10 - 22 mm F3.5 - F4.5 USM lenses
are the new EF-S mount design that will fit the 20D and 300D, but not
the older 10D. There is also the new Sigma Zoom Super Wide Angle 12-24mm
f/4.5-5.6 EX Aspherical DG HSM , but it's not much cheaper than the 10D
body you are considering.
