Here is an interesting article on agreements between Kodak and IBM.

The interesting part is Kodak gets a world class fine line (0.18um) , high 
speed (copper interconnect) CMOS manufacturing process, while IBM gets rights 
to "pinned" photodiode and switch patents used in Kodak CCD's.  The claim is 
good performance from smaller size pixel CMOS sensors, but with performance of 
smallest pixel CCD devices. They also get access to Foveon technology (through 
National Semi imager agreement) which may be helpful also for small area 
devices, for reducing the off axis effects of wide angle lenses etc.
