Foxy,

the ADSL filter is actually to stop the normal phones from attenuating
the digital signal... Expect intermittent problems if there is a
monitored alarm on the same service, as the POTS line is hijacked as it
enters the house, & interrupted periodically .

Basically the ADSL modem needs to be connected directly to the phone
line, & all POTS handsets/answering machines/faxes need to be isolated
by a filter (either 1 at the entry point, or one at each socket).

It's unusual to see ADSL filters permanently installed here in AU in all
but the newest buildings, AND there will be a dedicated & marked ADSL
socket. So I am assuming you have a filters with sockets ;)

if you have a 'central filter' (3 sockets): it goes between the wall
socket (marked 'line') & the ADSL modem (marked 'modem') - these two
sockets are essentially connected together. the phone next to the
computer goes into the 3rd socket on the CF (marked 'phone'). ALL other
phones in the house require microfilters between them & the wall
sockets.

if you have a microfilter (2 sockets): plug the ADSL modem directly into
the wall, all phones in the house require microfilters between them &
the wall sockets.

Have a look at http://www.dlink.com.au/products/broadband/filters/

drop me a line off-list if anything doesn't make sense.
