OK, I never did this, I don't have Photoshop here (not even a slide
scanner :P), and am in no way a image retouching expert, but I'd try to
put the shadow image over the highlight image, and adjust the layer
settings to "highlight only" or something like that. Then you can play
around with a layer mask.
