Same goes for filters as lenses - try to brush off grit, etc, before
cleaning so you don't scratch it. I've used ROR (residual oil remover) to
clean dirty optical glass. Perhaps even mild detergent and lukewarm water if
it was really dirty... haven't tried this though.
