Bill B. sent me a CD the other day of test images he did for me
of the 200/4, 100/2.8 and 50/3.5. I have his permission to post
these on my website and I will do so at some point this weekend.
I had a couple of immediate reactions to the images:

1. Bokeh monster! There is definitely a certain look to prime
lenses that no modern zoom can match. The penumbra is smooth
and has a georgous fade to it. Totally unlike modern Nikon
glass.

2. Color! I'm sure part of this was the lenses, but I'm totally
convinced that the E-1 produces the closest Fuji Film look of
any digital camera (except maybe the S2). The saturation is
lively, but natural--not anything like photoshop saturation.

3. Sharpness! The 50/3.5 produces sharp images and enough DoF
to work with, without screwing up the Bokeh too much.

Bill did the test to a particular set of requirements. I do a
lot of outdoor macro work and in 35mm, my most used lenses are
the 200/4 and 100/2.8. I wanted to see how they performed and
was suitably satisfied.

The ergonomics of the E-1 are astounding. I do like the
viewfinder, handling and weight. The size doesn't matter too
much since it is small enough to be portable without feeling
like you are parking a whale in front of your face.

But the color of the images is becoming the sellpoint for me. I
like the Nikon D1X for color, but don't care for the Canon's
colors.

Like a few others on this list, I suffer serious "should I"s in
regards to a new digital system. I really like the new Minolta,
but when it comes to the end of the day, what matters to me is
how well the camera interfaces with me and image color. If I'm
fighting the camera, I'm not getting the images I want.

The prices of new E-1s are coming down, but maybe I'll pick up
one after the new model comes out and they are a dime a dozen.
5MP is OK for much of my work, but 8+ would be nice too.
