They are businesses who have to cost every expense and routinise
everything. Thus the shipping cost includes everything down to the
provision of nice soft paper for the storage and packing area toilet.
Often they use a shipping service that comes picks up and packs. Such
things cost.
When I sell I can afford to spend time hunting around for a free box
and taking it to the post office without charging for my time or sticky
tape. If I costed my time at the same rate as I get paid in my day job,
factoring in all the employee benefits and facilities costs too, it
would get somewhat prohibitive - I should think a multiple of the cost
of the postage alone.
