Hmmm, I wouldn't recommend a flatbed for film.  For one thing, the ICE, 
or equivalent, must work more effectively in a film scanner.  But I 
have heard that the Nikons are very good.

I believe that.  I tend to scan grain as well as picture at 5400, but I 
save my files, re-sampled, at around 60Mb.  I reduce the longest 
dimension from around 7500 pixels.  I keep vacillating about whether or 
not to scan at 4000 and give up the work in-between ... ;-)
