I think I pointed it out here before but an excellent DoF calculator can
be gotten for free from the Digital Light & Color website here:
<http://www.dl-c.com/Temp/>

Once there, click on "downloads" and scroll down to "Depth of Field
Calculator" which is the fourth download entry on the page. It's not
very large and downloads and installs quickly and easily. Using the
calculator and, especially, reading the help file will give you a good
understanding of depth of field.

DL-C is the publisher of "Picture Window", a great alternative to
PhotoShop if you're on a budget. There are even a few things it does
better than PhotoShop. In my humble opinion, the "clone tool", for
example, is far superior to that in PhotoShop. I use both programs and
frequently wish I had PW Pro's clone tool installed in PhotoShop. The
advanced sharpening tool ain't too shabby either. Unfortunately, it
doesn't do PhotoShop "layers". On the other hand, even the Pro version
is only about 1/7 the cost of PhotoShop.

For those who might remember my recent post on relative DoF between
larger format cameras and the small sensor on most digital cameras; I
think I made a mistake in computing the resolution requirement for the
Minolta A1. I didn't allow for the fact that the Minolta has to resolve
3.6 times the number of lines as 35mm film for the same print size.
I'll have to redo it.
