You'd have to test for drain by going through a complete 'meter on' cycle 
with the ammeter leads on the battery.  Then, when the meter turns off, you 
can read the standby current, probably around 20 ua.  Just taking the 
battery cap off and reading the batteries with the meter off will give you a 
false reading.
