I apologize for my contribution to this little spat.

I don't really understand platform wars. I pick what I like. I build my
own because I can pick what I want. I'm picky, particularly, about
keyboards (I'm a touch-typist). I still have my old IBM, but this Dell I'm
typing on is a pretty good one. The other one I really liked was the
cheapy keyboard that was on my Amstrad CPC464. The only computer I would
have bought previous to that was the TI99. Glad I didn't, though.

Macs are out, because I have never got on with them. But also I like to
build my own from the case up. Reliability has never been a problem,
hardware-wise. Software is usually fine. Operating systems, well, I miss
Dos a bit, but my interaction with Windows is pretty slight. All my
software is Windows.

My first Dell, bought in 1998, is still going fine. This one, bought later
the same year by my father-in-law, is now at its limit with two hard
drives and 768MB of memory, PIII 600. Nothing original except the
motherboard, PSU, IBM first hard drive and the floppy, which I never use.

I use Office 97 Pro, Opera 7 and PS7. Uh, why update? This stuff is
already bloatware, and I use a fraction of it. Like instant histograms in
digicams, I manage fine without the refinements in later editions. YMMV,
as ever.

Buy what you want. Use it. The using is all.

D.
