I heard that the main-bearing support structure was not rigid enough to
support the loading applied by the higher compression of the diesel. Is that
correct? /jmac

No, the Olds line of gas v-8's were around for a long time before
the diesel version ever showed up. Obviously, the diesel version
was not exactly like the gas version, it was beefed up in certain
areas in order to be durable (it wasn't, so that was a complete
failure). But the two motors were so similar that for a number of
years, we offered our customers the option of buying a gas Olds
engine and swapping it in place of the diesel version. It basically
slipped right into place, you could even use the diesel engines
exhaust manifold, engine mounts, and all the bracketry up front.
You had to make minor mods for the throttle cable and trans
kickdown cable. There are many diesel trucks from that era
running around quite happily with the Olds gas 350 in them.

By the way, I've been a GM tech in the dealership environment
for about 25 years. I've had plenty of experience working on
those diesels...though it's all a distant memory now.
