Good news about your niece - you must be very relieved.

One of the managers from my workplace was in Thailand on holiday when it
happened. He returned last week, and we all heard the stories. Quite
horrific really - and he was extremely lucky. A shortened version of
his story ....

He was on the beach with his wife. His son had been in the water. The
son came to tell his parents that the sea had suddenly disappeared.
Apparently it had been up to his chest, then suddenly (in a matter of
moments) it was gone. The father said something along the lines of
"don't be silly", and the mother said "oh, that's a sure sign of a tidal
wave" (but didn't get up or even turn off her iPod !!).

The mother and son escaped the first wave, but the father (the chap I
know from work) was swept up with the wave and driven up the beach - and
through 2 beach huts. As the first wave washed out again, he managed to
grab hold of a parasol/umbrella and anchored himself in the sand. He
managed to get off the beach and far enough away before the second wave
hit the beach.

He is badly bruised down one side of his body, but doesn't really care -
he's just grateful to be alive.

Our thoughts are with those less fortunate.

Jon
