Hi all,

Another topic. No flames please, I'm just looking for guidance.

I have an old friend who has also been a friend for more than 30 years.
(We are both close to being classified as "old")

He works for a US government department as a scientist, and does a lot of
public presentations and teaching. Trees and forests are often involved.

He has just been told in no uncertain terms that they will not allow him to
use slides any more for his presentations and he must use Powerpoint+
digital images.

So he has asked me about choice of digital camera.

I have answered his last question about anti-shake technology (that it is for
photographer shake, and is well worthwhile), and have told him to spend a lot
of time in camera shops getting to know what digital cameras have to offer or
not. I also asked him how much money he expected to spend.

But really, I have never used a digital camera, don't plan to, and have not
taken a huge lot of notice of the digital discussions so far.

So, below I will post part of his letter, and I'd very much like to hear what
people recommend, given what he writes. By the way, I chided him mildly
about not having any lens wider than 50 mm.

..............

As one of the last of the techno-dinosaurs I plan to digital this year, and
would appreciate your advice.

Let me first tell you what kind of photography I have done over the last 40
years. I'm an old forester and thus a lot of my photographs were taken in the
woods.

Being an old photographer my current 35mm is auto-focus and I now need a
2 diopter view finder. I currently shoot with 400 asa at 2.8 f and preferably
above 1/125th. Often I use the macro mode on my 50mm lens. Although I
have access to a telephoto lens I almost always opt for 50mm. So lens
changing is not common. I see no need to record sound or movie frames. I
plan to mount my new digital camera on my microscope a lot more often
than I do with my film camera. Although I have had a few photographs
published over the years 99.99% of the time my work is used in slide
presentations.

To date my 35mm slides have clearly out-performed almost every power point
presentation they have been compared with. Alas most scientific meetings
will not accommodate my old technology. Given that I can not afford a
pro-DSLR, should I go for a 6 MP DSLR or opt for a 7 or 8 MP point-n-shoot?

Is there any gain from anti-shake technology if my subjects are trees?
