All you listees with your 300mm (or longer) lenses should consider a
quick trip to northern Minnesota to photograph a highly unusual influx
of normally Canadian birds, the Great Grey Owl. There are so many of
them north of Duluth that the story has made the Minneapolis Star
Tribune newspaper twice (www.startribune.com/outdoors) . More
information is available at www.cbs.umn.edu/~mou/ or at
www.duluthaudubon.org.
Snowy owls regularly enter the state in harsh winters. This year,
however, has been described as a "once-in-a-lifetime event" as far as
the great greys are concerned. I'm hoping to go up in a week or two
with my daughter (I got her a 500mm tele for her OM2N a few years ago).
Hopefully we can do even a tenth as well as one group of birders who
sighted about 200 owls in a day. The birds have obligingly now moved
even closer to the Twin Cities (there's a concentration 25 miles NNE of
Sandstone); the chances of them reaching sub-tropical central Iowa,
however, where they'd be in range for a silver-nosed tele, are nil.
Sorry, AG.
With a wingspread of 6', and a height of nearly 3' when perched on a
fence post, these are impressive birds. I'll be leaving my favorite
38/2.8 lens home for this trip.
Dean
