Except ethanol is a net energy sink, when you include the energy cost
of production AND the energy cost of growing the corn. (Cornell
University study -- I can dig up the reference if you're truly
interested.) As near as I can determine, ethanol is a farm-state
subsidy program, NOT a renewable energy program. The only thing that
makes it remotely attractive from an EROEI (energy returned on energy
invested) point of view is that the byproduct can be used to stretch
cattle feed, but most of the nutrition is gone by then.

I predict that at some point in the near future, the price of gasoline
will begin going up by an average of $1 per gallon per year. Many
analysts agree that point is within three or four years, some think it
may be right now. We are very near (if not slightly past) the peak in
global oil production, and supply is going to start falling even while
demand continues to increase. The US may put off the worst affects of
this peak by brute force -- taking an ever larger portion of the pie --
but the peak is real and will eventually catch up with everyone.

Believe me or not, but this is not a good place to discuss it. Try
these websites, then email me privately if you want to argue.

Requisite Oly content: I just got a new carrying case for my camera
gear that gets about 1,000 miles to the acre... a near-cherry 1982
diesel Vanagon with one previous owner and 105,000 miles, that I'm
going to convert to run on waste vegetable oil! (People can make
arguments about biodiesel made from virgin oil, but it's hard to argue
with burning something that came out of the rubbish bin... :-)
