We went there the summer before last, during the heat wave with daily
temperatures in excess of 100 degrees. We got the boat to Bilbao, and
then drove up into the Pyrenees and stayed there for a few days. Then up
to the Dordogne and on back up to Cherbourg, returning back to
Portsmouth.

We were travelling by M G Midget, so very little space for necessities,
let alone Oly gear. I had OM-1N with only 2 lenses, IIRC: 50 and 135.

Some of NE Spain is very beautiful on the coastline, and also inland as
you get into the Pyrenees. The people seem very friendly. The first
night we stayed fairly near to Bilbao right no the coast and it was
wonderful. There are allegedly some interesting towns and there's
significant Franco-related history in the area, though we didn't venture
that way as we were really heading to the Pyrenees.

The scenery in the Pyrenees is very beautiful, though perhaps not as
dramatic as SE France or the Alps. More like a slightly hillier
Dordogne. I don't particularly like towns, and it was also far too hot
for walking round them, so I certainly don't recall them being anything
special. I'm sure the caves would make for good photography if permitted
(but you're not!) and we didn't get in since the queues were too long
(folk trying to get out of the heat!)

So, all-in-all a lovely area, and friendly people, with some stunning
views. We stayed in a lovely old Chateau, and it wasn't expensive at all
(but did have A/C in the rooms, thankfully). I can provide details if
interested. From my perspective, take good lenses for landscapes.

BTW, it may well be wet in September. The area gets quite a bit of rain
overall.

Regards,

Simon
