When it is back on, break out the Copydex, apply a liberal covering to the
diamond rubber, and leave it to dry.  Then peel it off, taking with it much
of the ingrained 'material' that has been disfiguring the lens for so long.
Trust me, it works.

It's sort of what I was intending to do; I just wondered if there was a
slightly more "elegant" solution, such as:

1. Take ring off.
2. Clean up with alcohol.
3. Clean lens barrel with alcohol.
4. Heat up rubber ring in water to 143 degrees precisely to re-soften the
rubber.
5. Dry off carefully.
6. Carefully fit back on to lens barrel.

... or something similar.

If not, then Evo-Stik it is!
